I recently was put on synthroid 100mcg`s for a multinodular goiter enlargment. (excuse my spelling please!) i was wondering if i should be feeling anything started last thursay,?? i was also reading posts here about caffeine , i fear i am addicted. i drink coffee all day long , average about 6 mugs aday. Is this bad? will it make for bad absorption of the medication or my vitamins? and also i am a runner, i run at least 2 to 4 miles every morning 5 to 6 days a week along with weights 3 days a week, i have been having a rough time reducing weight , but recently lost 5 lbs out of the blue.( i am slightly overweight , as of now only 12 lbs. above what i wish to weigh)i am experiencing some tightness in my throat when i run... should any of this stuff concern me..???? I am so sorry to bombard you with so much ,, thanks for any help you can pass out my way! Tonya i forgot to tell you that i take alot of vitamins,,, in the form of a multi vitamin,-s there are way to many to name but here are a few i read you mentioning often,, as well as the amounts i injest daily. calcium-900mg iron-27mg kelp-150mcg magnesium-200mg zinc-15mg selenium-100mcg copper-2mg manganese-5mg chromium100mcg this mix also includes all of the b vitamins. i take these vitamins at lunch , and the extra calcium b 4 bed, i was told not to take these in the morning as the thyroid meds should be taken on empty stomache . i just wonder if i may be making things worse with all this,,i have taken these vitamins for years,,, the only new drug is the synthroid. thanks for reading my post , any help or ideas /answers, would be greatly app!!!! thanks Tonya Hi Tonya, While it’s difficult to tell exactly what is going on with you given the limited amount of information, I’ll put together some things that you should look at and perhaps experiment with. The fact that you have both a goiter and hypothyroidism indicates that you are most likely deficient in either iodine or selenium. Since you have iodine in your multiple and are probably using iodinated salt, it’s probably not iodine. Selenium is the most likely deficiency. You are getting 100 mcg of selenium a day, but this may not be enough. You may have mercury fillings in your teeth and the mercury is using up selenium in the process of removing it from your body. Also you may have a lot of cadmium intake sources. Read the cadmium file including the page underneath it (look at the Table of Contents). I still have not found out if coffee is a source of cadmium, but decaffeinated coffee is listed as one. You may be getting cadmium toxicity from the mug that you drink coffee out of. I would change this to a glass mug. Also check the pot that you brew coffee in. You may want to go to a glass container. Another suggestion is to drink more green tea as a caffeine source to replace some of the coffee. I don’t think caffeine is a problem but it’s more likely to be heavy metals introduced into the coffee in processing. If you aren’t feeling the effects of the Synthroid, this is another indication of selenium deficiency. Selenium is essential for the conversion of Synthroid (T4) into triiodothyronine (T3) which is the hormone that affects metabolism. I would think that if your selenium were adequate you’d feel the Synthroid right away. If you got a full thyroid panel done, showing both T4 and free T4 and also T3 and free T3 that would tell you if you are converting T4 to T3 properly. My suspicion is that your T4 is ok but your T3 is low. To get a better picture of your deficiencies, it’s best to get a hair analysis. See the hair analysis page for information. In the meantime you could try increasing your selenium intake and take steps to decrease cadmium intake. To lower cadmium eliminate all dairy products, cut back on green leafy vegetables and carrots, stop eating chocolate, and read the cadmium page carefully to get additional information. Let us know how things are going. John Nancy, 3/8/01 Subj: success, almost |
